In 1975 there were 9 new homes started on US Route 2 south of SocorRO - they are now known as "Homes for Mexico"

Socorro, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,383 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Socorro was founded in 1847 by Texans who emigrated from Spain and Mexico. The original settlers were cattle ranchers and farmers. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Brazos River and its strategic position as an important crossroad between New Braunfels and Austin. Socorro remained a small town until the early 21st century when it experienced rapid growth owing to its convenient location, strong economy, and wide range of cultural activities. In recent years, Socorro has become known for its annually held Christmas parade which attracts thousands of spectators.
The first permanent settlers in Socorro were the Pinos, who arrived in 1827. The town was named for the Santa Rita Mountains to the north. In 1836, a convent and private school were established in Socorro by Sisters of Charity. The convent still operates today as a religious retreat center and school. A post office was founded in 1840, and became an important transportation hub for goods coming down the Rio Grande from Mexico City. By 1865, there were over 100 residents in Socorro. In 1880, José Antonio Carrillo y Salinas donated 1 million pesos to establish a university in Socorro. This donation allowed for the construction of several universities around Texas including Sam Houston State University (1901), Texas Southern University (1906), Baylor University (1920), and UT Austin (1970). During World War II, Socorro played an important role as a military base with its airfield being used by both American and Japanese forces. In 1945, it was renamed Fort Worth Army Air Field after General Dwight D Eisenhower's installation at nearby Randolph AFB. The airfield was closed following the war and most of its equipment/ buildings transferred to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport which is now known as George Bush Intercontinental Airport
