There has been a shooting at the Socorro, New Mexico high school since 1907. In that year, a group of men working on the Union Pacific Railroad were shot and killed by gunmen while they were changing trains. In 1969, five people were fatally shot and three wounded after trying to steal cars from an auto dealership in Socorro. On October 17, 1984, a gunman opened fire on students attending Sam Houston State University during halftime of their football game in Huntsville, Texas. Eight people died and seventeen were injured before the shooter was apprehended. It became a municipality in 1912 and was named for the Spanish word "socorro" which means help. In 1954, it merged with Midland to form the city of Midland. In 2006, the city of Midland and the surrounding rural areas were annexed into the new city of Socorro. The name "Socorro" comes from two Spanish words meaning Help or Refuge. The first word is derived from the phrase "No puedo defenderme sola." This means I cannot protect myself alone so someone else should come to my rescue especially if they are strong enough to do so. The second word is derived from "soco" which means sugar cane andarrowe (humble) and rojo (red). So these two words together mean redeemed or blessed place where sugar cane grows abundantly. In 1881, English colonists arrived in what is now Midland County and began Settlement near what is now Socorro Springs. They named their new community SocorROsprings after nearby Rancho San Marcos de la Cueva de los Alcalde de SocorrO (the ruins of which still stand today), which had been donated by Juan Bautista Alvarado y Costilla to Mission San Francisco Arcángel on March 12, 1796 Pico de Neve about 15 miles [24 km] east of present day Midland City Limits on Comanche Road between Palo Duro Canyon National Monument northeast of Alpine National Forest northwest of White Sands Missile Range southeast of Isleta Mesa Campground on behalf of Mexico City Governor Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as part of a larger Donation including 600ranchos[1]. With only 10 inhabitants during its early years,SocorrROsprings quickly grew into one of Texas’ most important towns due to its strategic location at the crossroads connecting several wagon highways that served eastern New Mexico Territory with East Texas settlement led by Sam Houston during his Lone Star State Rebellion against Mexican rule over much of central Southwestern TX., West Texas settlement led by General Antonio Lopez Santa Anna during his War for Independence against Spain’s rule over much peninsular TX., migrant workers brought overlanders such asEROzarriero[2], Mestizos who came southward in search of work at local mines including Don Carlos Meade’s Mine Company active along Rio Grande near Wharton Bayou opposite Uvalde when it was discovered rich coal seams there beginning around 1859[3], Mexicans working at various stages within ranchos owned or leased by Anglo-American ranchers prior to statehood; all working under contract terms set forth by their respective owners/managers before departure permitting no free choice among them thereby maintaining some degree ol subordination owed both voluntarily and involuntarily theretofore[4],[5],[6],[7]". In 1836, the Mexican government designated Socorro as the seat of an Indian agency and its population grew rapidly due to the land boom that followed. By 1840, Socorro had become a thriving city with over 1,000 residents. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Texas seceded from the United States and formed its own country. The new nation kept Socorro as its capital until 1868 when it moved to Austin. With no market for goods produced in Texas’ newly created state, business owners decided to move their factories south into Mexico City instead. This exodus of businesses led to a decline in population atSocorro between 1870 and 1880. However, this period of economic stagnation did not last long; within 10 years (1890-1910), Socorro had regained its previous level of population growth thanks to immigrants coming from all over America to find work in the expanding oil industry. At this point in its history, SocorRO was one of the most socially active towns in Texas; it hosted several major events such as rodeos and carnivals along with social clubs for men and women which still operate today. Unfortunately, during World War I (1914-1918) socorrO experienced some significant destruction as many homes were looted by Confederate troops looking for arms caches or gold shipments destined for New Mexico settlements bordering on Texas’ borderlands. Despite these troubles Socioro continuedto grow steadily throughthe 1920s becoming one of Texass fastest growing cities ever according to historian John Foust Jr.. Between 1950-1960 socorrO underwent another massive transformation with numerous new buildings being erected near downtown including a large shopping mall known today as “The Mall” which remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in town today!
In the early 1900s, Socorro was a small town in the Texas Panhandle. It was located on the banks of the Rio Grande and it became a stops for travelers on their way to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The town had a post office, two churches, and a school. In 1909, Socorro had its first paved road and by 1915 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1916, Socorro's first grocery store opened and by 1925 it had become one of the largest in town. In 1930, Socorro had its first movie theater and by 1936 it had two schools.
