Socorro is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,814 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat and largest city of Hudspeth County. The name "Socorro" means "sorrowful voice." The large copper mineowned by the Socorro Copper Company operated here from 1872 to 1902. In 1905, the company merged with two other copper companies to form Phelps Dodge Corporation. After World War I, Socorro's economy shifted towards agriculture; however, during post-war years it became an important military installation due to its strategic location on the Rio Grande River between Mexico and Central America. Today socorro still has strong military ties as a base for both air activity and narcotics smuggling operations The first European to arrive in what is now Socorro was José de la Cruz y Ortiz who set up a trading post there in 1794. Mexican colonists arrived over time and various Native American groups were also established before white settlers began arriving in significant numbers in 1836. By 1860 there were around 160 people living hereabouts with some 10% of the population consisting of Anglo Americans (English-speaking) and 10% Indians or Mestizos (mixed Indian/Spanish descent). These early settlers did not build permanent homes but leased land from local chiefs for hunting and fishing rights which they then sold off after commodity prices went up along with new transportation methods such as wagon trains across country Pony Express routes connecting central California with points eastward including Santa Fe New Mexico Territory In 1875 Englishman James Hogg bought 2,000 acres (10 km²) from Juan Bautista Mora at $10 per acre ($242 per hectare). He built his own home on this property called Hogg’s Rancho Seco about west of present day SocorRO station on U.S.-Mexico border near today’s Reynosa Municipality . Hogg laid out a township named after him that included parts of present day SocorRO plus many other towns within Hudspeth County . On July 1st 1870 , James Hogg organized what would become Republication Township located within present day SocorRO limits A water main break occurred just south of town on FM 2712 on October 9th 1890 causing extensive damage especially to houses & barns which forced many people intoarroves where they cooked their meals over open flames until help arrived On November 16th 1893 John Wesley Powell made his historic hike downriver valley accompanying General Antonio López de Santa Anna while exploring Spanish Dolores District north of San Luis Potosi Territory ): At 3:15 pm he reached an altitude of 825 feet above sea level left behind evidence that he had been deep inside Presidio La Bahia - one mile below original river bottom which lay beneath modern day Paso del Norte Municipality much later known as Pueblo Chico National Monument
