Socorro is a city in Texas, located near the Mexican border. It is the county seat of Socorro County. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. The name "Socorro" comes from two Spanish words, sojourn and rojo (red). Sojourn means to visit and rojo means blood or life. This was the name given to Socorro by its original European settlers because they believed that all of the people living around it were killed by Indians in an earlier part of the history of this area. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were French colonists who founded San Felipe de las Casas Parish in 1795. They named their village Sojorno after a rancho (a piece of land) that they owned near present-day Socorro City. French residents built Fort San Marcos on what is now called Rancho Santa Fe just east of modern Socorro on November 4, 1807 as part of a military campaign against Apache Chief Cochise’s forces attacking Mission San Gabriel Arcángel near Tesuque Valley. The town was platted on March 14, 1828, when James Bowie and Simon Bolivar bought 5,000 acres (20 km²) along Rio Grande River for $5 per acre ($30 per hectare). Anglo-American settlers began arriving in large numbers during the 1830s, most coming through New Mexico before arriving in Texas via traders and travelers such as David Coke and William Hogg en route to Zacatecas and Monterrey respectively. By 1835 there were over 100 people living in Socorrotown; however, it would not become an important settlement until after General Sam Houston's victory at Alamo Creek on July 6, 1836 which led to Mexican independence from Spain that same year. The town growth began after settlers from New Mexico arrived in 1827 and found fertile land to grow crops and homesteads near Socorro Creek. In 1840, a post office was established in the village of Socorro and mail service began operations from Santa Fe on October 14, 1840. The first school opened in 1847; it became an academy in 1893. During World War II, Socorro served as a major training center for military personnel who fought against Japan on the Pacific front. After the war, many businesses were created including Don Blanco Cigar Company (founded 1915), American National Bank (founded 1918), Goudey's grocery store (founded 1922), Texaco Refinery (founded 1926), and several churches (including those built between 1907-1915). In the early 22nd century socorró had started to experience some problems due to its location surrounded by hostile Apache country which caused much unrest among residents until finally white settlement occurred with better management skills brought over from central America where such settlements usually proceeded without any issues or fear of conflict or violence
