Socorro is a town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls–Fayetteville, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Socorro was Gaspar de Portolà on October 13, 1719 and named it Socorro after Saint Canice who had been martyred in Rome. Spanish traders passed through the area and may have called it San José de los Reyes because of its similarity to Santiago in Chile. A post office was established at Socorro in 1871, and by 1900 there were over 100 residents living there. The first school in the community was built in 1892 and soon became an important factor in society with its own landowning families able to send their children to school. In 1906 two brothers founded the First Baptist Church which still operates today as one of the largest churches within town limits. In World War II many local men enlisted for military service including George Hargrave who served as a radio operator with Army Air Forces Station Wichita Falls from 1943-1945; Clarence Bowers who fought during World War I with both American (US) and Mexican armies before returning home; Forrest Pritchett who served as a paratrooper during Operation Overlord; Earnest Morehead also serving during that campaign; Ronny Youngblood; Leroy Jordon; Howard Bechtel Sr.; Clyde Bechtel Jr.; Donnie Bechtel III; Herb Laddsberry who served as mayor of Wichita Falls from 1984-1988 A new high school was opened north of town by then Principal Deputy Mayor Donnie Bechtel III following plans formulated by his father-in-law Leroy Jordon when he became city manager five years earlier. That building now houses local businesses located on three levels including several restaurants/bars/ nightclubs on one floor while another level offers more classrooms/office space for various government agencies below ground level used currently for storage or other uses not easily visible from ground level
