Socorro is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cameron County and the home of the Socorro War Memorial Museum. The name Socorro comes from Spanish meaning "soup" or "place for soup." earliest settlers were Spanish Franciscans who founded a mission in 1821 near present-day Socorro. The church has been moved multiple times and its current location is unknown. A post office was established in 1827, but no mail was ever delivered to Socorro until 1861 when the first stagecoach arrived there. In 1872, an oil well was drilled in what is now SocorRO and production began immediately which led to increased business for local merchants. By 1909 there were over 100 businesses operating in town with manufacturing including wagon saddles, boots, hats, pants and other items. The People's Republic of Texas (PROTAS) took control of Mexico during World War II and occupied much of south Texas; most notably SocorRO where they built a military airfield known as Camp Bowie which became one of their main supply points for Tule Lake Air Base on nearby Yucca Mountain. After the war ended PROTAS withdrew their forces from southern TX but not from SocorRO where they continued to operate a munitions plant until it closed in 1984 due to environmental concerns about nearby crescent rock formations that emitted harmful radiation

In November of 1847, Socorro was founded by Manuel Alvarez. It became a municipality in 1858 and on July 1, 1865 it became a city. On December 17, 1882 it became an independent republic and on October 29 of that year it was annexed by the United States.
