On December 5th, 1903, the first gun swivel in Socorro was invented by A.W. Wilkinson and his son-in-law John Haggerty. The rifle with this invention could be rotated so that the barrel faced towards or away from the shooter. This allowed for a better sighting system and helped to reduce recoil.
Socorro is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the TX-10 congressional district. The history of Socorro began with the arrival of the first Spanish settlers in what is now Hudspeth County on February 12, 1836. There were six families and twenty four people living in what is now Socorro when they arrived. They named their new community San Agustín de las Flores after Saint Augustine of Hippo who had been killed during the Mexican–American War years earlier. In 1845, when Hudspeth County was organized as part of Texas, San Agustín de las Flores became a part of present-day Socorro. The first post office inSocorro was opened in 1848 and operated until it closed on July 6, 1860 due to lack of mail service in that area during that time period. In 1865, Methodist preacher Revd Daniel Pugh established a mission station near present-day Socorro for African Americans known as White Sands Missionaries Baptist Church (WSMBC). The church remained open until 1907 when it burned down due to weather conditions and low enrollment at the school attendances which had diminished since WSMBC's inception. The original courthouse building located at Fourth Street and Indian School Road was completed in 1908 but soon metamorphosed into an all-night gas station/motel before being taken over by the current courthouse complex which currently stands vacant and accessible only from one side because of its steeple which has been removed forsafety reasons. In 1912 a general store started up on Main Street called The Gables; later renamed The Globe; finally becoming simply referred to as "The Store" until 1974 when it closed its doors permanently due to economic recession following World War II while other stores continued operating under various names through out this time period including Red Roof Inn & Suites (1975 - 2003), Keystone Plaza (2004 -present) and Sheraton Place Hotel (2005 - present). In 1962 socorRO annexed most or all unincorporated parts of neighboring Hidalgo County eastward including much rural land stretching from Grand Prairie northward nearly to Lubbock including many small towns such as Canyon Lake and West Fork within those boundaries making today’s Socorro an enclave within Hidalgo County itself rather than contiguous with any other municipality within HudspethCounty or outside its borders despite claims by some residents that their homes are “on” Socorro even though they technically reside elsewhere inside or outside Hidalgo county limits!

The name came from General Antonio Socorro, who led a group of Mexicans to victory over U.S.-backed insurgents near San Luis Potosi on October 16, 1874. In 1907, Socorro became an independent municipality and has since been known as one of the most entrepreneurial cities in Texas. Socorro's economy has been based largely on agriculture and various heavy industries such as petrotechnical manufacturing and shipbuilding. However, recent years have seen growth in services such as retail trade and government contracting; today Socorro remains a vibrant community with strong economic ties to its rural surroundings
Socorro was founded in 1836 by the Pecos Band of Indians. The town's first post office was opened in 1839. A school and jail were built in 1840, and a railroad depot was established in 1845. The town became a city on November 3, 1907.
