In 1865, Congress passed an act providing for municipal government within Travis County and authorized Westphalia Township to annex additional land east of I-35E for a new city called "Socorro". The town was platted on July 8, 1865 by J.D. McGregor and Wm Hogg with a population of 170 residents (). A post office was established at Socorro on February 14th, 1868 (). The first school was built in 1870 by Mrs John Fenton and cost $2 per year to maintain (). The first doctor came to SocorRO in 1875 and his name is still remembered today – Dr Jesse Simons who served until 1917 The original downtown business district (now Commercial Street) opened up between First Street southward from US Highwayalgus Boulevard eastward from I-35W on October 22nd 1886 pursuant to an agreement made between Mayor Laddie Weisenberger (D) and Mr Prentice Hetherington (R). At that time there were no banks or stores open outside OFA territory so goods had to be brought into town via wagons or stagecoaches which took several hours each way! Significant growth occurred after World War II as many people moved into the area due to agriculture jobs opportunities created by changes such as mechanization/the postwar boom following World War II; however much recent growth has been attributableto suburban development which encroached upon farmland previously used for farming purposes only minutes away by car! The present School District No. 2 was organized in 1909 and has since grown to include over 50 schools with a total enrollment of over 26,000 students grades 7 through 12 The most important event that occurred during the early years of SocorRO was when it became known as the site where General Sam Houston's army encampment rested for three days after its victory over Mexico at Yoakum Creek on November 6,1846. On July 8, 1865, General Sam Houston's Austin Brigade halted an attack by Mexican troops led by Colonel Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna near present day Dairy land south of town (now east of US Highway 281). This battle is generally considered to be one of the few engagements fought by American forces during Texas' annexation into Ulysses S Grant's United States Army as this area had been controlled by Mexico since 1836 In 1910, Socorro began construction on what would become its only high school - East High School which opened for instruction in 1911 In 1966 – 1967 there were several large fires that swept through downtown SocorRO and much damage resulted including $2 million worth of destroyed property
