It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area and the San Antonio-New Braunfels Combined Statistical Area. Socorro is located on US Highway 281 south of Fredericksburg, about 24 miles (38 km) east of San Antonio and 132 miles (217 km) west of Dallas. In 1830s Spanish missionaries founded what would become Socorro as a missions station in present day Williamson County. The mission was abandoned in 1868 after California's Mexico War; however, Mission Santa Clara de Tamaulipas still remains today as a shrine to Anglo Christians who are buried there. In 1875 Don Francisco Lopez purchased 5 square leagues (10 acres) of land from Manuel Martinez for $5 per acre ($40 per kilometer). Lopez founded the village of Socorro on this land with 10 adobes or homes built between 1875 and 1880. By 1889, when Mexican president Porfirio Diaz granted citizenship to American citizens in addition to Mexican citizens, 1,500 people lived in Socorro with 350 businesses and one school. A post office was established at Socorro on December 17, 1889 by mail from Austin. From 1890 until 1920 it was called Villa Blanca because white residents only used black convoys for postal service instead of hiring their own carriers due to racism then prevalent throughout most parts of America In 1930 the town had an increase in its population when 99% farmers relocated from rural areas into new housing developments near IH-45 which cut off access to rural areas for much of Williamson County so many people migrated intoSocorr0 during that time frame . With more than 4 thousand residents by 1960 , growth stalled again until economic recession caused by oil production brought increased development along IH-45 while reducing access to rural areas once again making Socorro an agricultural community once again
