Socorro, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Mexicans in 1848 as part of the Gadsden Purchase. In 1851, it became part of the new Mexican Republic and was named Ciudad de México. On November 14, 1912, Socorro was founded as an independent municipality by its citizens after they successfully petitioned the state legislature to become an autonomous municipality. The name Sociorro is Spanish for " befriend" or "cooperate". The first school in Socorro was built in 1849 and opened to teach children from age 5-12. A second school followed in 1850 and it became known as la Escuela de las Mujeres (The Women's School). The first post office in Socorro was established on April 15, 1851. In 1860, a store opened up and started selling goods such as meat, flour, eggs and milk to settlers throughout Hudspeth County. By 1865 there were 11 businesses open in SocorRO with a total population of 2,000 people. In 1870 there were only 100 people living here but this number increased to 350 by 1880 due to increasing trade with other parts of Mexico City as well as cotton plantations down south that produced more than 400 acres (200 hectares) of cotton per day! In 1902 the Mexicali & Gulf Railroad came through town making it easier for traders to get goods into Hudspeth County from Aztlán which had been under Mexican rule since1869! This allowed farmers to sell their crops directly to merchants instead of having them transported downriver where they would be sold by barge or steamboat then shipped back across the border again! As a result of this development SocorRO grew quickly becoming one of the most important communities within Hudspeth County! On October 10th 1907 local residents voted 50% yes on a proposal asking for cityhood status! This madesocorrO one of only two towns in Texas approved for cityhood before Proposition 187 took effect!!! After much discussion between Mayor Hidalgo and City Council members about what type of government socorrO should have (city or county), on November 17th 1907 voters finally agreed upon creating a city government with mayor/council form!! This marked the beginning of an exciting period for SocorRO during which many development projects came our including: addition/construction of a municipal building; annexation/ incorporation into other municipalities; establishment of schools; creation/establishment OF parks; establishment/ Establishment OF mercado
