The town of Socorro, Texas was founded in 1853 by the brothers Miguel and Antonio de la Garza. The first post office in the community was established in 1854. After a brief time, the town became a county seat in 1857. In 1860, Socorro was named for San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico City's patron saint. Spanish settlers arrived in what is now Socorro during the Alamo-San Jacinto War (1836-1845). Those who survived were forced to march through central Texas to Santa Fe to surrender their arms and property. Some of those who made it out alive were given refuge by José Tomás Mora y Bascomín on his ranch north of Socorro. On January 7, 1847, Mexican general José Antonio Flores y López rido an army under General Joaquín Arista of all American forces at San Jacinto River Bridge; however Ulysses S Grant had already crossed over on December 12th and continued his march into Mexico City. The Battle of San Jacinto took place on July 6th; General Flores was mortally wounded and died two days later from his injuries at Alamogordo Barracks east of Mazatlan. On November 10th, 1850 Governor Manuel Micheltorena ratified the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1865–66 federal troops fought against Confederate forces led by John Brown at Harney County Farmstead while local militias patrolled the area around Socorro looking for Brown's rebels. A year later when peace restored control over Texas following Reconstruction, Recovered Citizens erected a large wood frame courthouse/ jail near where today's Park Drive intersects FM 620 south of town square. In 1888 Congress passed An Act To Provide For The Government And Regulation Of Indian Tribes In Texashire And Its Vicinity (25 Statutes 459), providing for missions among Apache Indians living along the Colorado River northwestward to Trinidad Valley On October 16th 1890 El Paso County Judge James Waddell sentenced twenty nine men charged with theft from an Indian encampment near present day Alpine on US 97 west of town square to be executed that night after being found guilty by a jury including future US Senator Prescott Bush cowboy William McKinley intervened and halted execution before it could begin
On July 24, 1836, Socorro was founded by the Spanish in what is now southern Texas. The town was named for Sancho Panza, a general of the Spanish army who fought against Mexico in 1812-1813. The first post office was established in Socorro on October 1, 1836. The first settlers were Mexican Americans who had settled near San Antonio. By 1840, there were over 100 residents inSocorro and its environs. In 1850, the United States acquired Texas from Mexico and the original Anglo settlers abandoned their properties to become Texans.
