Socorro is a city in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 23,722 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest city in Texas and second-smallest in the country. Socorro is located on the bank of the Brazos River and has a rich history dating back to 1836 when it was founded as an unincorporated community by American missionaries. The first post office in Socorro was established in 1836, but no town charter or ordinances were ever issued. In 1849, citizens of Socorro petitioned for incorporation as a municipality with five members who would serve as trustees and police officers. On July 3, 1850, the City Council granted incorporation to Socorro and its first mayor was Fenton Cordero. The original town plat included only one street - Elm Street - with no public buildings or residential areas available until after 1870 when school rooms were added on Elm Street and other streets were laid out around town paralleling river banks for water storage purposes. By 1880 there were two churches (the Methodist Episcopal Church and Baptist church), four residences (two houses each), three businesses (a grocery store, wagon shop, sawmill), two schools (one elementary school and one high school) and twenty-six residents; all without any government assistance other than occasional donations from citizens themselves! On February 16, 1886, during a severe thunderstorm that produced wind gusts up to 100 mph (160 km/h), parts of Hudspeth County became involved in what came to be known as "The Great Socorro Flood". A channel had been cut through the mountains near Socorros mouth allowing floodwaters from upstream to flow into town while preventing them from reaching deeper inland ditches where they might have posed more serious problems downstream. This event caused extensive damage both within and outside of town with over $2 million dollars worth of property damage done alone! Over 2 dozen homes were destroyed or damaged beyond repair including many that still stand today such as The White House which had been built by President James Kenedy Jr., although it has since been reconstructed multiple times! In 1920 residents voted not to annex neighboring Georgetown because they felt that annexation would give their small city too much control over an already large Georgetown which they considered too important economically for their small community to compete against. However this decision didn't sit well with Georgetown's Mayor John Matson so he did what any goodMayor would do; he appealed directly to the Texas Legislature!!! After months of lobbying successfully getting his legislation passed!, on January 9th 1921 City Hall finally annexed Georgetown making Socorropas third largest city!! The name "Socorro" is derived from the Nahuatl word for "saved." In 1912, Socorro became part of the United States and it has been its residence since then. Sister María Teresa Cecilia Valladares joined him on his mission and soon started making donations of food and clothing to the villagers. The sisters also founded schools for children in Socorro. The first store opened in 1892, but it was not until 1915 that Socorro had its own school system. The first post office was established at Socorro in 1907, and the firstphone service arrived two years later. In 1940, a bank was established here, followed by a hospital in 1951-1957; both were destroyedduring World War II but were rebuilt during subsequent decades. In 1969-1973, socorros played a significant role in helping to stop Mexico City's Earthquake which left over 10 thousand dead or injured along with many structures including churches and homes demolished or damaged beyond repair as well as widespread crop failure that resulted in mass starvation among the people affected by this disaster. When NAFTA was Signed which added America Mexico’s second largest economy it created new opportunities for businesses like Don Miguel Alemán’s Refinerías Mexicanas SABR (RMSA) who relocated their operations from Monterrey to Socorro because they could operate under lower tariffs than what would be available north of the border! On Christmas day in 1847, Socorro, Texas was founded by Diego Rivera and his family. The town was named for the Santa Maria del Rey River which flows through the area. The Rivera family irrigated their crops with water from the river and later built a sawmill to produce lumber. In 1865, the townspeople erected a schoolhouse and began to offer schooling to local children. By 1870, Socorro had a population of around 400 residents. In 1881, Socorro became an incorporated municipality and its first mayor was Francisco Avila. In 1912, José María Escobar became mayor and served until 1944 when he died at the age of 64 years old. On November 15th of that year, Socorro became an independent municipality once again under municipal law number 2186-1912. In 1936 it gained city status once again following approval from the City Council with Mayor Antonio Ramos as its first mayor. That same year it also received its own fire department which still exists today as one of Socorro's most distinguishing features today! In 1951, during Mayor Manuel Gomez's term as mayor (the last municipally elected), socorrros amalgamated with other nearby municipalities such as Laredo to form San Antonio County in order to improve economic development opportunities for all citizens within that county! This merger did not go well however as many people felt that their hometown had been taken away without proper compensation or consultation! After much deliberation by both sides over several months, negotiations finally led to a resolution being passed approving this merger on July 20th of that year! Mr. Gomez then resigned effective August 1st due to health reasons; leaving office just days after taking office! His successor was Mr. Hernán Moreno who served until 1963 when he too resigned due to health reasons; leaving office just days after taking office! Finally Mrs., Rosalinda Martinez took over from her husband in 1965 until 1973 when she also resigned due to health reasons; leaving office just days after taking office! Nowadays there is no public housing available inSocorrodcities like there used to be but back then it seemed like everyone wanted one since they were so rich now!!!!!!!!
