In 1960, Socorro joined the Houston metropolitan area and has since thrived with its growing economy and numerous cultural attractions. Socorro is a small town in southern Texas, located about 15 miles southeast of Midland. The town was founded in 1847 by James Fenton and his wife, Nancy. It became a part of Midland County in 1876. The population of Socorro was 5,471 at the 2000 census. The first settlers to Socorro were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1837. They built the first structures in what would become Socorro – a log cabin on the banks of the Rio Grande. In 1840, John Ahern moved to Socorro from San Angelo and started an agricultural business that still operates today. He also served as sheriff of Midland County for several years before he died in 1849. In 1846, Mexican forces invaded Texas and began raids into British-owned territory south of the border. One such raid resulted in the death of two Rangers named Hidalgo and Encinas near present-day Socorro. This event sparked off a political fight between Anglo Texans and Mexican nationals that would last for many years to come. In 1865, General Sam Houston returned to Texas after spending three years fighting against Mexico City’s efforts to reestablish control over South Texas following its independence from Spain. Upon his return, he erected an impressive monument commemorating his victory at San Jacinto which stands today outside city limits (along with other historical landmarks). Houston also established Gobierno de Texcoco (Government of Texcoco) nearby which acted as an intermediary between Santa Anna’s government east of the Rio Grande and early Spanish settlers living west of it; this body eventually fell apart due to internal squabbling within its ranks later on.) As time passed more Anglo Texans arrived in Socorro; these settlers generally brought their livestock and land holdings with them when they moved here from states such asTexas or Kansas along with some skills or technologies they had learned while living elsewhere during their previous lives back home before coming to Texas specifically to settle down hereabouts (elements like railroads etc.). Some notable Anglo Texans who came toSocorRO during this time include: Caddo Fitzpatrick (1850-1924), Wm McDermott (1851-1925), JF Ladd (1863-1948), Chas Chandler (1864-1945). Englishman John Geddes settled down around 1870 while families from England started arriving soon afterwards including himself, father & son George Geddes & Maurice O'Donnell among others; all 3 sons eventually became ranchers themselves ↑↑↑
