Socorro, Texas is a small town located in the Mexican state of Baja California. It was founded by Anglo-Americans in 1853 as Socorro, a rancho (land grant) given to them by Mexico. The name comes from the Maya word "soco" meaning “a place where there is water” and "ororo" meaning “the fortification of the place.” In 1868, when it became part of the United States, Socorro was renamed for General Zachary Taylor and his wife Julia LawtonTaylor. Today, Socorro is known for its annual rodeo which takes place at Fair Grounds Park on Labor Day weekend. The early history of Socorro is intertwined with that of nearby Escondido and San Diego. These towns were established as businesses along the Arroyo Seco River because they were needed to support burgeoning American settlements in Baja California during the mid-19th century. The river served as transportation and trade routes between these regions and also played an important role in social infrastructure development. The first formal establishment of a town in present-day Baja California took place on July 3, 1853 when Captain John Waddell arrived at Socorro with several hundred settlers from New England aboard his ship HMS Beagle and granted them Rancho San Carlos de Alvarado (later called Rancho Santa Fe). At that time, this stretch of present day Baja California was still part of Mexico City Province under jurisdiction of Yucatán Province under military governor Pedro Armijares de la Cueva y Valdez. In 1871, following Mexican independence from Spain, America acquired much of what today comprises Mexico State through the Gadsden Purchase; including parts of Baja California Proper including Socorro Municipality. With increased access to land after years of surveying and purchase by American investors via Ulysses S Grant’s Land Acquisitions Act,, various ranches were subdivided into tracts or farms for Anglo settlement near Mission Bayou (now Redondo Beach), East Los Angeles County (now Orange County), Escondido Naval Air Station(nowHermosa Beach), La Jolla (now La Jolla Shores), Encinitas (present-day Pacific Palisades), Point Loma(present-dayLaguna Niguel)and other areas throughout what are now southernmost Los Angeles County and northeastern Riverside County; all withinBaja California again under military governor Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla before becoming part of northernMexico State effective November 1st 1873.). Assembling families who had migrated overland from many different partsof North America during those heady days soon formed two large local gangs: Los Zetas – or “The Outlaws” – made up largelyof Texan Mexicans living east Side South Pasadena around Main Street opposite El Camino Real School until 1870 when they relocatedtheir activities southward into Pasadena proper due primarilyto competitionfrom Anglos seeking cheap labor on irrigation projects west sideSouth Pasadena open only to Anglo farmers whileMexicans working on these same projects remained apart Of law enforcement jurisdiction.–Anglo crime being rife back then By 1860 population numbers had exploded significantly due to waves OF migration spurred by new jobs available west sideSouth Pasadena just off Route 66., Labor shortages consequent thruout US ragtag country causedby numerous factors such as lack o engineers/builders neededfor new roads/canals etc.;Soldiers barracks dotting landscapeTV Studios lots etc….
