Socorro, located in San Luis Obispo County, Texas is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in El Paso County. As of the 2010 census, Socorro had a population of 2,362. The community was named for Spanish missionary Father Isidore Socorro. It was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1912. The first post office in Socorro was established on April 12, 1912. The name of the settlement changed to Socorro from Spanish San José on October 15, 1912. The first school opened in 1914 and continued until 1954 when it closed due to lack of students and money. A new school opened in 1955 which remains in use today as the present day SocorRO School District No. 1's only high school campus with a population over 900 students grades 9-12th grade The current mayor is Darrell Ligon who served since November 2018 until his reelection on November 3rd

Socorro is a town located in El Paso County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Juárez Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Socorro were Spanish traders from Baja California in 1795. A mission was founded there in 1821 by Father Antonio de la Garza y Ortega and Brothers Miguel y Francisco de AsÃs. In 1836, Socorro became a Mexican state under President José JoaquÃn Herrera y Costilla. The Mission San José de las Flores remained until 1845 when it lost its funding and closure followed by an Indian massacre ofsixteen friars on October 15 of that year which left thirty-three men dead and seventy-eight women and children raped or abducted. On January 14,1846 Mexico acquired US land grants Rancho San Marcos Nuevo including Socorro from Antonio López de Santa Anna for $5,000 with 10% interest to future Mexican landowners; it was soon after renamed Rancho La Libertad (later Rancho Socorro). In 1890 the Southern Pacific Railway built a line through Socorro connecting Juárez with El Paso. The railroad helped spur development in nearby Socorrodowntown as well as new housing developments on the eastern edge of town near Interstate 25/Upper Loop Road/Lake Shore Drive beginning around 1920s via what is now Park Boulevard east of I-25 south of Loop Road north of Lake Shore Drive between about 1915 and 1925 There are several small businesses still open today along this corridor including two convenience stores (Albertsons & Safeway) opened in 1984 adjacent to Interstate 25 south side long ago vacated by QFC Kroger - this location has been used as truck stop since 1984 by Albertsons reducing traffic congestion on I-25 In recent years there have been several attempts to redevelop this area into an urban center with mixed results There are plans for a high school, retail complexes such as Walmart Supercenter and Home Depot store but these have not yet materialized
Socorro was founded in 1827 by José de la Barrera. The town became a key commercial center due to its location on the La Rioja River and its access to shipping. The name Socorro comes from the Spanish word "socorrer" meaning to comfort.
