Socorro is a small town located in Potter County, Texas on the border of New Mexico. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque, NM-Mexico City, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Socorro" means "saved by God." The Socorro post office was established on December 12, 1876, and served until it closed on October 15, 1960. The first postmaster was P.M. Hargrave. From its inception to 1960, Socorro had two newspapers - The Daily Review and the Republican (now defunct). In 1908 John Wesley Powell visited Socorro while he was exploring the Chaco Canyon area in New Mexico and recorded his findings in a booklet entitled "Chaco Canyon: A Record of an Expedition," which became a favorite with locals and has been reprinted many times since then. In 1909 Wm J. Latham founded El Paso & Rio Grande Railroad Company Ltd., which built a line from Socorro to Ciudad Juárez through LARraines Canyon south of Socorros rural center This line opened for business on January 1, 1910 It continued as an independent subsidiary of Northern Pacific Railway until it merged with UP in 1970 Today's Union Pacific Railroad provides passenger service over much of this ill-fated trackage

Today, Socorro is known for its shopping centers and nightlife district called "The Strip." It also hosts several annual events such as the Fiesta Bowl game or the New Mexico State Fairgrounds parade.
