The Snyder area has been inhabited by humans since the early 1800s. The first documented reference to Texas is in a Mexican land grant dated 1836. By 1860, Snyder was a small town of around 100 residents with a school and two stores. In 1875, General James Hogg founded the Battle Creek Indian Reservation east of Snyder. On October 8th, 1875, Battle Creek Indians fought a pitched battle against white settlers at Snyder. The Indians lost approximately 50 killed and 30 wounded. In 2002, the Texas Legislature passed a bill that created Snyder's current boundaries - including all of Hudspeth County - following a census showing that the population had increased by almost 50%.
