Snyder, Texas is a small town in the county of Kerr in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is named after General George Snyder who helped to lead the Union Army during the American Civil War and was later appointed as Ambassador to Russia by President Abraham Lincoln. The community was established when some settlers from nearby Clear Lake homesteaded on land that now includes much of Snyder County and parts of Hudspeth County. The first settler in what is now Snyder County was James Hickey who started a homestead on December 12, 1874, about twelve miles east of present-day Snyder City. Other early settlers included John Cavanaugh (1875), Elias Howe (1876), Michael Maher (1877), Wm Grosse (1878), Jno Griffiths (1879) and Phebe Reese (January 6, 1880). By 1886, there were ninety-six residents living in seventeen households within three square miles of Clear Lake where water rights were sold for $1 per acre ($36 per hectare). In 1892, local citizens raised money to purchase 100 acres northwest of Clear Lake for permanent settlement and christened it "Snyder" in honor of General George Snyder who had led Union forces during the American Civil War and been later appointed as Ambassador to Russia by President Abraham Lincoln – an event which has been mentioned often in local history books ever since. At that time there were only six houses in all of Snyder County with a population numbered around eighty individuals including six children born into slavery following their parents' capture at Appomattox Court House while fighting for Confederate States/ America - they are still considered part of the county's historical fabric today as descendants can be seen throughout its municipalities: Black Jack City limits include sections near present day Parker; White Oak Township limits include portions north/west OF Sherman; Saginaw Township boundaries encompass west OF Pryor; Dixon Limits encompass east OF US Highway 61 North or Cosa Mesa while unincorporated areas within those boundaries include portions east OF US Highway 61 South or along TX State Line before meeting again southwest Of US Highway 361choes Spring Creek Ranch which surrounds Spring Creek Reservoir before finally terminating In Black Jack City Limits just outside downtown Prescott Valley
In 1836, when the Republic of Texas was founded, it included what is now Snyder County. The county seat was at Austin and the first courthouse was built in 1837. In 1848, Snyder County became part of the newly formed State of Texas.
