The Snyder Massacre took place on October 26, 1911, when gunmen opened fire on a group of farmers in the town of Snyder, Texas. Eight people were killed and twenty-one were wounded.
Snyder, Texas is a small town in East Texas. The population was 2,722 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Grayson County. The first settlers to Snyder were farmers and traders who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1836, General Sam Houston appointed James W. Snyder as one of his commissioners to oversee land purchases in East Texas. The town was founded on July 4, 1836 by surveyors from Austin and other towns in southern Travis County. Snyder served as mayor from 1849 to 1850 and again from 1857 to 1860. He also represented Grayson County in the Texas House of Representatives from 1861 until his death in 1865. In 1893, President Grover Cleveland designated Snyder as the location for a new national military academy called West Point Military Academy which would become an important training ground for American commanders during World War I and World War II. The United States Congress appropriated $20 million for construction of West Point but only $10 million was received by president McKinley before he vetoed it due to budget concerns; this event is known as "The Great Veto". In 1960, when Lyndon B Johnson became president of the United States, he ordered Ulysses S. Grant High School (now Lone Star College) built on land donated by Snyder; it opened its doors to students in 1965. In 1978, Snyder was selected as one of fifty communities across America that were recipient of the National Civic Award program administered by Dale Carnegie Corporation; this recognition helped increase local tourism and economy opportunities within his community.
