Snyder, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Snyder is located on the right bank of the Trinity River and it is bordered by Midland to the north, Sherman to the east, Garland to the south and Palestine to the west. Snyder lies within ZIP Code 76570. The first European settler in what is now Snyder was John Bennett in 1836. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from David Laney. In 1839, William Kerr came into Snyder with his family and began farming there. His son-in-law James Hargrave also arrived in 1840 and began farming there as well. On July 6, 1845, Laddie married Washburne Clements of Palestine who had come overland from Missouri with his father-in-law Captain Nathaniel Lyonett. They raised chickens near their cabin until they could buy enough land for a farm at present day Main Street/Route 66 intersection (old location of Post Office). The first public school was built here in 1865 by Mrs. Laura Bowiebaugh (daughter of General John Bowiebaugh) under sponsorship of Mrs. Hargrave and Mr2 Rev Wm Fenton (Dentist). A two story schoolhouse was completed next door in 1870 but it burned down during an accidental fire three years later while store owner Hiram Pritchard was away on vacation! After that fire occurred a new two story brick building replaced it which still stands today across from Central High School on North Main street - one of only four buildings remaining from when this community consisted of just 20 homes! In 1896 worship services were moved to nearby Smithsburg chapel where they remain to this day! In 1902 Sweeny Vaught bought some 160 acres adjacent to current day Apple Valley Road/SR 521 for $5 per acre which he used as pasture for his cows until 1915 when he started selling lumber rights worth up to $75 per cord because timber prices were high due to World War I shortages! In 1925 he sold all his holdings except about 10 acres along SR 521 which became known as Vaught’s Prairie or “The Wilderness” because no wood could be found there so much so that postmaster Atherton ordered all mail sent via horseback through Houston instead! When local farmers couldn’t find buyers for their goods following World War II prices plummeted making agriculture unprofitable so Vaught abandoned his land & leased it back out sometime after 1951?! In 1957 voters passed an ordinance authorizing election of board members with power To make all changes necessary for proper functioning Of Snyder Municipal Corporation including hiring or firing employees etc…. This ordinance remained effective until 1978 when township officials revoked it because no one wanted to run for office!!! In 1996 Snyder voters reapproved an ordinance providing for annexation by Midland City Council thereby creating a new municipality known as Midland Township without giving prior notice!! It should be noted that both ordinances originated from resolutions passed at special meeting convened pursuant thereto!!! As mentioned earlier, Snyder rests upon the banks of the Trinity River where pioneers such as John Bennett set up homes around 1800 BC according to oral history preserved by pioneer James Weaver Sr..
