Snyder was founded in 1871 by postmaster James Snyder and his wife, Evalyn Bancroft Snyder. On May 20, 1881, the town charter was granted to the community by Commissioners Court convened under the original organization in Van Zandt County. The first settler on Snyder's square mile (square kilometer) site was John Ahern who arrived from Kansas on April 21, 1871 and built a log cabin near present-day Parkdale Road and Gibson Avenue. Ahern's son William Sperry Ahern donated land for a school in 1872. In 1878 Wm H Smith came to Snyder from Louisiana with his family and started a grocery store which soon became an important landmark within town limits. The first courthouse in Snyder opened on December 15th of that year and served as until 1900 when it burned down due to arson by local teenagers. The early years were difficult for Snyder as industry only began to take off around 1910 when oil lamps became available for illumination thanks to new discoveries in North Texas area accessible through railroad lines running through Tarrant County that made production possible In 1916-1917 there was significant growth of the agricultural sector with dairy farming becoming more common; however this development petered out during World War I because of food shortages across most of America By 1922, manufacturing had become more prevalent with businesses such as Ford automobiles being established followed by other industrial expansions such as furniture manufacture . However during the Great Depression this growth stopped as resources were depleted leading to increased unemployment rates among residents . Continued economic challenges led to increasing violence within communities throughout the 1930s although some progress has been made since then including passage of state law legalizing gay marriage in 2011 . However recent population growth has led to increased tensions between residents especially along Parkdale Road where many people have invested their time and money into property redevelopment project

The town acquired its name from General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The Snyder family then settled down in the area and took over a small farmstead. They began to grow corn and wheat, but soon realized that they needed to get more water for their crops. So they built a sawmill on the river that flows through their town. The mills produced flour, lumber, pigs, cows, cheese and other goods for local farmers until it closed in the 1960s.
