When the first shots from the cannons of the Texas Revolution were heard in Snyder, it was December 6, 1836 that a group of young men and women volunteered to arm themselves with muskets to fight for their state. The town had been designated as the site of a military academy by General Sam Houston, who was then governor of Texas. The Americans soon realized that they would need more than just citizen volunteers to fight on their side in the war against Mexico. They also needed arms and ammunition. A small company was organized to buy munitions from England and France. The purchase went smoothly until January 8, 1837 when an embargo was placed on British goods because of the Embargo Act of 1807. This caused much financial trouble for the company and made it difficult for them to get what they needed. Meanwhile, back in America, things were still going sour with Mexico. On February 14, 1837, Mexican troops invaded Texas and set up camp at San Jacinto near present-day Snyder. Santa Anna ordered his army into action and began firing on American forces stationed around town. By February 17th, most of Snyder had been destroyed by Mexican gunfire or taken by surprise attackers while its defenders attempted to flee across the Brazos River into Canada (the only route open at that time). Only a few brave souls managed to escape under cover of darkness; these are known as The Lost Battalion. A total of 24 citizens perished during this engagement which is still commemorated annually by locals as "The Battle Of San Jacinto." Aftermath: Casualties: 23 Americans killed - including six members of The Lost Battalion- plus 10 Mexicans killed; 2 Texans captured; 1 US soldier wounded

Over time he developed this land into what it is today thanks to his hard work and dedication. In 1865 he married Lavinia Tarrant (1825-1913) who was also from nearby Wichita Falls – one of the most influential women in early Texan history. They had six children together before divorcing later that year due to differences over child custody issues; Lavinia would eventually marry another man while her son remained living at home with their father until his death at age 88 years old earlier this year!
