Sherman, Texas is one of the oldest towns in the United States. It was founded by General Sherman in 1867 as a ranch town on the banks of the Trinity River. The town grew rapidly following his victory over General Johnston at Chickamauga Creek in 1863, and by 1876 it had become a city. Sherman prospered thanks to its location on the Mississippi River, its access to water supplies, and its location near cotton plantations. However, during World War I Sherman was bombed by German bombers, which destroyed many of its businesses and killed many residents. After the war ended, Sherman reverted back to a small rural community. However, during the late 1990s and early 2000s it began to undergo significant revitalization with the help of local philanthropists such as Rick Dobler and Dick DeVos III. Today, Sherman is home to two universities - Southern Methodist University (SMU) and Rice University - as well as numerous cultural organizations including The Assemblies of God Church and The John Birch Society.

Grant and his wife Julia Child Sherman. The population was 3,451 at the 2010 census. The town has a history that goes back to 1879 when General John B. Sherman settled in what is now Sherman, Texas with his family. In 1881, Sherman donated land to the city of Austin for use as a public square and school district boundary line. In 1907, the city of Austin created an annex to its own territory east of I-35 and north of US-20 which included most of what is today called Shermantownsend (though it technically began with the annexation). After years of debate over whether or not to name the new town after Ulysses S. Grant or Julia Child Sherman (the latter being chosen because she had such influence on him during her lifetime), residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of naming their new community after Grant on November 4th, 2003. The first business in town opened that day - The Post Office at 2nd & Marshall Streets - along with two other businesses: A&W Restaurant and Mrs. Joe's Coffee House! It wasn't until later that it became known as "Sherman" from its location off US-20 just south of I-35 and east of FM 1499 (now part of White Sands Missile Range). In addition to its namesake general who fought in many wars including those around Mexico City and World War II; other important figures associated with Sherman include Drue Hecht who served as medical director at Memorial Hermann Hospital; ranchers Lamar Greenlaw and Donnie Painter who developed much of what is now downtown; local politicians like current Mayor Alonzo Turner; real estate developers Harry Payne Whitney and Wayne Vaughan who built some notable homes in town including Shermans' Grove Estates & Parkview Manor; entertainers Frank Sinatra Jr., Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Harry Belafonte etc.; plus countless others whose names are still spoken today by locals or have been immortalized through products such as Historic Hotels Corporation's varietal brand "Sherman".
