Sherman, Texas is a small town located in Vernon County, Texas. The population was 581 at the 2000 census. Sherman grew up on a family farm and now resides in the city of Fort Worth. Sherman has been known as an apple orchard town for many years and still produces apples today. The area around Sherman was first settled by European Americans in the 1840s. In 1846, General Stephen Austin sent a detachment of troops to clear land near what is now Sherman to make way for the new capital of Texas, Austin. One of the soldiers from this group was John Boggs, who became one of the first settlers in what is now Sherman. The early settlers in what is now Vernon County were farmers who leaned more towards grazing their livestock than farming due to lack of resources at that time. However, over time some decided to settle down and started planting crops such as corn and beans. By 1870 there were about 20 farms with a total population of 316 people living in Vernon County according to the US Census Bureau’s population report from that year. In 1876 Charles Goodyear explored what are now eastern McLennan and western Fort Worth counties while he was working on developing his "Goodyear Tire" company which would become one of America's most successful companies during its early days (1896-1957). He traveled through much of southernTexas during his trip and noted that there were no settlements suitable for habitation other than those situated around Lubbock on the lower Red River near present day Alpine National Park because it offered good grazing country for sheep and cattle plus access to water supplies from underground sources. Goodyear recommended moving eastward along present day I-35W into McLennan County so as not to limit future settlement opportunities within his proposed domain but this proposal never got off the ground because White businessmen saw potential economic advantages associated with expanding their businesses into neighboring counties (Lubbock being one example). In 1899 Sherman's post office opened after being donated by Mr John Wickersham (president) MD & Mrs Mary A Clements MD; both ladies also acted as postmasters until 1915 when they finally retired due to health issues; however, mail continued arriving at Mrs Wickersham's home until her death in 1916 A school district formed out of all county units - Vernon School District No 1 - was established August 9th 1902 when: Stephens Female Academy opened under Miss Fannie Weems (grades 1-8) ; McClure Male High School opened September 10th 1902 under Rev Elisha Gates Sr.; both schools closed November 30th 1957 after 54 years together
