Sherman, Texas is a small town located in Midland County, Texas. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–Jalisco, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Sherman were Germans who arrived in 1845. They built a store and farm on the modern day corner of Ulysses Road and Elm Street. A post office was established in 1848, and by 1860, Sherman had a population of twenty-two residents. In 1865, the depot that served Sherman was destroyed by fire; however, another depot soon replaced it. The first school was built in 1861; it became an academy in 1868 when nearby San Antonio opened its doors to students from Sherman. In 1907, the Republican Party formed a committee to nominate candidates for statewide office; two members of this committee were nominated for sheriff and representative to the state board of education (later called the Texas Board of Education). The first county election held after party formation took place on November 3rd; James Hetzel won over seventy percent of the vote against three other candidates to become sheriff. On November 6th following his victory over Hetzel (and with no opponent running), he became county treasurer and began serving as such until his resignation effective January 1st 1912 due to term limits set by then governor Potter Taft Jr.. On January 15th 1912 Governor John Connally appointed former Sherman banker George Wickersham to fill Wickersham's unexpired term as county treasurer while he served as commissioner of public works under Connally. Wickersham would remain county treasurer until his death on December 30th 1922 due to natural causes at age eighty-six years old; however, he left behind an legacy which continues today: The George Wickersham Foundation has been providing financial assistance throughout Central Texas assisting low-income families since 1927.
