The first gun sling in Sherman was created by David Withers in 1876. It consisted of a piece of fabric with a webbing sewn around it to form an "A" shape, and was used for target shooting. In 1887, Laddie Stephenson developed the Stephenson Gun Sling which became popularized in Sherman because it allowed shooters to carry their guns without having them hang from their shoulders. The Stephenson Gun Sling can be seen at various businesses and attractions in Sherman today. The gun sling continues to be popular in Sherman today and has been used for hunting, fishing and target shooting since its creation over 100 years ago.

The town's name is derived from General George Sherman's march through Texan Territory during the American Civil War. Sherman was one of many towns to be burned by Confederate forces during the war. The community began as a farming settlement on the banks of the Rio Grande near what is now downtown Sherman. A post office was established in 1883 and continued operation until it closed in 1912. In 1924, Sherman became an incorporated town under law number 24-A-1128 which granted voting rights to women and opened up its businesses to local entrepreneurs. In 1930, industrial production moved out of town and most residents left forEconomy declined as oil prices declined beginning in the early 1970s; however, some businesses have reopened over time such as a grocery store and restaurant that reopened in 2003 after being vacant for more than 20 years In 2013, Sherman partnered with New Mexico State University to develop an innovative rural college experience program which will offer students hands-on learning opportunities including agriculture, forestry and fishing industries; entrepreneurship; ranching; animal husbandry; real estate development In 2017 voters passed Measure O which will provide funding for tornado recovery efforts within one year

Sherman, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas. Sherman was founded in 1881 by John L. Sherman and his wife Laura. The community had its first store on the current site of the building that now houses the Sherman Community Center in 1909. It grew rapidly after World War I when many veterans returned to America and began farming families here. The population of Sherman peaked at around 2,500 in 1930 but declined during the Depression and World War II due to migration to other areas of Texas. Today, the population is only 100 people and most residents work in nearby Fort Worth or Dallas. The history of Sherman goes back over two hundred years. In 1881, John L. Sherman brought his family from Illinois to Williamson County where he started a farm with nine acres of land near what is now known as Battle Creek Road. Over time, John L’s family increased their land holdings until they had over one thousand acres within Williamson County by 1930- which included much of present-day Sherman Township including today’s downtown area and much of rural eastern warfare creek country surrounding Battle Creek road). Sherman was founded on December 12th 1881 by John Lister (1859 -1939), his wife Laura (1860 -1946) and six children: Jack (1882 -1981), Harry (1885 -1972), Edna (1887 –1989), Shirley (born 1888 –1976) and Donnie(1890 –1983). By 1910, there were ten businesses operating in town with a total payroll for $1,824 ($103 per capita). In 1924/25 alone, 30 new businesses were opened! The post office closed on May 16th 1927 but reopened under new management on September 10th 1928 with Wanda Beasley as Postmistress; she served until her retirement on January 2nd 1964 after 49 years service! In 1951/52 the school district changed its name to the Williamson Independent School District; this name lasted until it merged into the Dallas Independent School District in 1972! On November 3rd 1912 Mrs Wanda Beasley gave birth to her only daughter Hilda Mae Beasley who would later become an accomplished artist while living in Arlington Heights IL
