In the early 1800s, Sherman was a small farming community located in east Texas. The town was founded by John Sherman and his family in 1837. The first post office in Sherman was opened in 1841. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the cotton fields of southeast Texas and its access to shipping routes. In 1861, Sherman became the capital of Texas after the state seceded from the United States. As part of Texan secession, Sherman refused to allow Union troops into his town for training purposes. This led to a series of skirmishes between Union and Confederate forces that culminated with the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1865. After the battle, Sherman's holdings within east Texas were crushed and he emigrated to Canada where he died in 1870. Gunsight installation also increased accuracy while engaging targets due to improved targeting technology which developed following World War I: wireless direction finding receivers which identified targets via signals sent back and forth between operators; machineguns which fired automatically with no operator input required; and photoelectric rangefinders which plotted position information relative to objects within designated ranges using light waves bathing Earth
