This led to declines in business and population, which contributed to financial troubles for the city. In 1932, Sherman merged with neighboring Carthage into a single municipality known as Carthage-Sherman. This merger failed to provide enough financial stability for either community and both towns dissolved within two years.

Sherman was founded in 1881 by James Sherman and his wife Anna Lillie Dixon. The first post office was established in Sherman on July 10, 1881. Anna Lillie Dixon died in 1916 and James Sherman continued to operate the business until his death in 1942. He was buried at the Forrest Cemetery east of town.
The name "Sherman" comes from Jesse Atherton's account of his Mexican adventure (1839), which mentioned a place called San Patricio de las Flores where they skirmished with Indians and found that its name meant "place of wild figs". In 1861 an act was passed providing for Spanish land grants to be made available along the Rio Grande to Texans who had served in Confederate troops during the American Civil War; these grants were later divided among various families including those of Jesse Atherton and his brother Edward Hance Sr., both of whom became ranching magnates associated with Sherman.
In 1881 pioneer Thomas Ewing began farming what would become known as Indianola within sight of present day Sherman; he named it after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Mexico's liberator from Mexican captivity during that years' war (see: Battle of Indianola). By 1907 Ewing had increased acreage to , making him one of America's largest landowners west of Interstate 40 (). In 1924 he donated nearly all his holdings northward to Wichita Falls City Schools through Distinguished Alumni Foundation Incorporated (), serving as Trustee Emeritus since 1984.
A number of businesses have been located near or within town limits over time: grocery stores operated by J R Gritsch (1914-2002), banks operated by First National Bank (1892-1998) and Citizens Business Bank (1920-2002), dry goods store operated by Sears Roebuck & Co.(1929-2000), hardware store operated by White Hardware Company(1915-2002) and Piggly Wiggly hamburger stand opened on Main Street in 1951 (). Today there are two restaurants - TCBY's Pizza Place & Joe’s BBQ - as well as three convenience stores - KFC, Subway and Charmin - along with four shopping centers - Walmart Supercenter IGA, KOCH Martens department store, Sam’s Club Center
One notable resident who moved away from Sherman over time is entrepreneur Hal Needham who left following World War II to startNeedham Paper Products Incorporated (); however some family memories remain about him living locally including playing golf courses nearby or hosting dinners at home.< ref />Today much agricultural activity takes place within driving distance including corn ethanol production plants located adjacent Toeppner Corn Refinery #1 ‘ 2 located on US 281 just east off FM 965 while another ethanol plant (#711) produces biodiesel fuel.

The first gun choke was invented by Captain James Cook in 1775 while he was exploring the Australian mainland. Cook's design featured a metal band around the barrel that could be tightly bound to the stock of a rifle to prevent it from firing. This choke was soon adopted by British troops during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The American Revolution saw the development of handguns and rifles with a variety of choke designs. The most common type at this time was the Remington Model 870, which featured a standard pistol grip and an evacuated magazine that allowed for multiple rounds to be fired without having to reload. This style of gun choked using a single shot twist locknut on the bolt handle allowed shooters to fire multiple rounds without having to remove their firearm from its holster or field position. During World War II, many different types of firearms were developed for use in combat including sniper rifles, machineguns, and artillery pieces. One common type of gun choke used in these weapons was called an "over/under" choke, which involved attaching an overhand sling loop to the front sight post on one side of the firearm and then running it through an opening at the back of the receiver extension on another side (see Figure 1). This type of choke allows for quick chambering and is often used when shooting over obstacles or into crowds because it gives shooters more control over where their shots will hit.

Sherman was a settlement in the present day Robertson County, Texas, United States. Sherman was named for General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the American Civil War and later became a general in the Confederate army. The town was founded on July 26, 1871 by settlers from eastern Missouri. Sherman's first post office opened on August 10 of that year. The town grew rapidly, with a population of about 250 by 1900. Sherman's economy depended largely on agriculture; however, during the 1920s and 1930s it lost its importance as a farming community to nearby Austin and Waco. In 1935, Sherman was renamed Fort Worth after then-Mayor James Fenton Garner of Dallas completed construction of what is now Arlington Memorial Park overlooking Fort Worth Harbor. In the early 21st century, Sherman continued to decline; by 2010 it had only a few hundred residents remaining
