Sherman was founded in 1881 by John Sherman and his brother-in-law, George Patton. The town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant, who had helped to organize the Texas Rangers in 1876. The first store in Sherman was built on the corner of First and Main Streets. In 1886, the Sherman School District was formed, and the first school building, which still stands today, was erected on that same site. By 1907, Sherman had a population of over 500 residents. The town's largest employer during its early years were agriculturalists who raised livestock and grew crops; later businesses included a grocery store (1914), post office (1916), several banks (1920s-1950s), and a doctor's office (1956). In 1925, Sherman became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and seven council members; it remains an unincorporated community today. However, after the war ended in 1945, most factory jobs shifted away from downtown Dallas towards suburban areas such as Arlington Heights or Mesquite. With no major industry left in downtown Sherman after World War II it slowly declined into obscurity until restored by local citizens in 2009 through support from funding from Mayor Tom Lescott Today downtown is home to several small businesses while other parts of town have seen renewed interest with plans to redevelop entire blocks around First Street between Elm and Houston Streets – including plans for a hotel/conference center/entertainment district – making downtown once again something much more vibrant than it has been in recent memory.
