The Seguin, Texas History Museum is a museum located in the city of Seguin, Texas. The museum was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to the history of the city and its surrounding area. The museum has exhibits on local occupations such as agriculture, oil industry, mining, and lumbering; as well as items from around the world.
Seguin, Texas is a small community located in south-central Texas. The population of Seguin was 2,854 as of the 2010 census. The name Seguin comes from Spanish and means "place where cattle were pastured." It was founded by Anglo Americans in 1881 as a ranch town to provide grazing land for their cattle. The community grew rapidly after World War II when the petroleum industry began to boom in the area. Today, Seguin is an affluent suburb with high-end homes and businesses. The history of Seguin is intertwined with that of its neighboring towns and villages. As early as 1881, Anglo Americans established settlements in what is nowSeGUINITY (formerly White Settlement), including Lubbock, Cimarron and El Paso Counties. By 1915, theatrical productions had begun to be staged at Lubbock's Majestic Theatre; this led to the founding of the El Paso County Playhouse Company which leased space at 9th Street and Broadway in 1907. In 1916, ranchers who grazed their cattle on government land located east of Saguinus formed the Rancho Seco Cowboys Association which purchased 3 miles (5 km) northeast ofthe present day city limits of Seguin from Colonel James Bowie for $1 per acre (0·75 ha). This acquisition increased activity around Saguinus since it provided pastures for 1 million head of beef during those years alone! In 1925, developer Harry Fenton acquired 7 acres (2 hectares) north-west of Saguinus from Colonel Bowie for $3 per acre ($50/ha). With this purchase Fenton became oneofTexas' earliest developers; his business ventures would include oil Refineries at Waco(1927), Amarillo(1928)and Beaumont (1929). By 1935 he had built 4 residences withinSeguin borders - these were #6 Cooley Place (), #8 Haskell Place (), #10 Magnolia Place ()and finally #12 Timberline Drive (). These single family dwellings were typical throughout much OFTexas during that period: wood frame structures measuring 40 feet × 30 feet (.12 m × 0·85 m), self-contained garages or shacks with attached toilets and running water served by hot water systems furnished by individual homeowners (& often shared with friends & neighbors). Two years later on October 15th, 1937 local residents streetscape changed as US Highway 281 bridge over San Antonio River renamed Guadalupe Street Bridge following approval by voters referendum (#9111)! A few blocks west along Guadalupe Street was erected Father Angelico’s Catholic School building serving grades K-8 until school closed on December 15th 1972 due to growth within [the then growing] suburbs adjacent to Southpark Mall! With more than two decades experience under his belt Fenton developed his first tracts northwest [of Saguinus], lying near present day IH 35 & FM 620 approximately southeast corner lot 6441Ft just inside Brazos County line on National Forest boundary . His tract comprisedapproximately 122 acres centered mostly around house numbers 10 through 16 currently used today as home sites for ladies Retreat Estates subdivision “Pine Lake” development www4evergreenvalley subdivisions . Development began circa 1949 when first families moved into their new homes .... first use taxes assessed April 14th 1951 ................. consisted primarily Of parcels measured between 21st Street NW @ FM 620 corner lot 6441FT & FM 35 NNW @ 12481FT ...... most current Use tax assessment date November 20th 2009 ................... parcels have been reclassified several times thru out history .............. note: lots included herein may have changed hands numerous times thruout history
