Seguin is a small town in Texas, located on the bank of the Trinity River. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and lies within Travis County. Seguin is home to two universities, Lamar University and Plano Technical College. The name "Seguin" means "stone point." The community was founded by Anglo-Irish settlers in 1827 as a trading post on the Trinity River. The first store was built in 1829 and named for George Seguin, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Texas legislature. In 1835, Seguin became county seat of Travis County after it was moved from Dallas to its present location on the banks of the Trinity River. Today, Seguin is one of America's oldest agricultural communities with rich history dating back to pioneer days when families raised crops such as cotton, corn, dairy products and hay for their own use or sold them to other farmers in surrounding counties. Some of these early pioneers are buried at nearby Mount Carmel Cemetery (now Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church), including Samuel Huggins (1792-1876), who settled near what is now Hearns Road; John Chilton (1801-1879), who owned land east of present day IH 35W; James Fenton (1824-1912), who founded Fenton Mills; Archibald McDonald (died 1886) and his familyowned McDonald’s restaurant across from Pioneer Park before it burned down in 1907; and Edward Cope (census date unknown) who farmed near what is now FM 1536 south of town limits. In 1870, Elisha Mitchell opened a general store here which continued operation until 1951 when it closed due to economic conditions following World War II.
