Seguin is a town in Texas, United States. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County and was founded in 1879. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Seguin is located on the San Antonio River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of downtown San Antonio and 40 miles (64 km) north-northwest of Austin. The first European to visit what is now Seguin was José de la Garza y Luna on July 10, 1793 while exploring Mission settlement near modern day Interstate 35W. La Garza hired two small parties of Native Americans to guide him and his party upriver until they reached a large body of water that he named "Chisos Creek". He then joined forces with Manuel Armijo y Larraz who had been sent by Governor Felipe de Neve to establish presidio along Chisos Creek in present day Hudspeth County. La Garza's group built Fort Máximo on an artificial island formed by dune building which served as their headquarters for some time before being abandoned around 1802 when the mission moved nearby to new land northeast of San Pedro Bayou which later became Austin. In 1847 Pioneers John Neely Bryan and George Brown established the cattle drive from Wichita Falls south through present-day Hidalgo County into Texas on what became known as “The Great Open Road” under license from Mexico City authorities seeking refuge from US military presenceeast of this area during the Mexican–American War years. The drive stopped at Presidio del Rio Grande on January 6, 1848 after a weeklong journey that started March 15th near modern day Springdale and concluding February 26th at Presidio General Antonio López de Santa Anna near Victoriaville where they were met by Mexican cavalry commander Páez Romero who took them prisoner and transported them back across border into Mexico where they were paroled without ransom to await passage back into this country on April 1st aboard USS Constitution under command of Commodore James Kenedy but instead ended up landing near Matamoros November 11th following an order from Emperor Agustín de Alvarado ordering all Mexicans not within 500 yards (300 m)of US FORT MEXICO surrenders including those outside its boundaries since Sept 25, 1846). This event helped spur American development in that area with Texans beginning exploration and Army units moving into present day Hudspeth County during early 19th century as part of efforts led by Colonel James Bowie to secure major river ports on both sides of river valley linking this area with central America During slave trade era many African Americans enslaved here came overland via wagon train or ship arriving December 12th1840 through Atascosa Pass making it possible for most people freedom only after reachingpresent day Uvalde County either downriver or along old route taken west past Tomball then south through New Braunfels thence east past Waco before reaching San Angelo where many settled including William Travis who purchased Rancho Niguel from José Joaquín Naranjo for $6,000 May 9th1846 just one year after original grant date also becoming owner/managing partner in Zapata Land Company organized by Michael Jarratt August 29th1849 which operated between Nueces River Valley east side now Angelina River Valley west side until sometime prior to 1860 when ill health caused closure & sale to David E Wells largest ranch ever unleased public land acquisition in TX
