Seguin, Texas is a small town in the heart of the American West. It is located on the banks of the Trinity River, about sixty miles northeast of Austin and less than seventy miles from Dallas. The population of Seguin was 2,089 as of 2010. The area that would become Seguin was first settled by Native Americans in the late eighteenth century. The first white men to arrive were prospectors looking for gold and silver in what is now central Texas. In 1867, John Sinton founded Sinton Mining and Manufacturing Company, one of the earliest mining companies in Texas. In 1868, James Haney organized a post office at Seguin and named it after himself. In 1865–1866, Austin was destroyed by an earthquake that killed more than 200 people. A number of businesses were destroyed or damaged including Sinton Mines and Manufacturing Company which continued to operate until 1870 under new management. At this time there were only five houses in Seguin and all but two were built before 1880. The first school opened in Seguin on November 1, 1879; it was called School Number One because it served as the only school for miles around. This small school was replaced by a larger one on April Fool's Day 1899 after voters approved an amendment to the state constitution giving citizens right to vote without having to attend local schools provided they could demonstrate their ability to learn effectively in such a setting. The second school opened in Seguin on October 17th 1896 when School Number Two became available following construction of an addition along with four classrooms and a well-sized library known as "Lone Star" Library which functioned alongside School Number One until 1915 when it closed due to financial difficulties related largely to World War I effort shortages within Texas government coffers then unable or unwilling to fund its own operations again like most other public institutions during those days either state or national government run) . (This Lone Star Library building still stands today across from Interstate 20 eastbound just south of US 183.) In 1836, father and son, Jameson and Jesse Seguin, founded the town of Seguin on the banks of the Brazos River in what is now La Porte County. The town was named after George William Seguin, a United States surveyor who had surveyed the area in 1825. It became an important stop on the Texas Trail during its early years. In 1849, it was renamed to Dallas after General John Fenton Dallas, commander of American forces in Mexico during that year's Mexican-American War. The city of Dallas was incorporated as a city on November 15, 1907. The population of Dallas increased rapidly following World War II when the military base shift from Fort Worth to Dallas created new jobs and housing opportunities. Mexicans also received land east of the Rio Grande, including what is now Houston County and much of west-central Dallas County.
