In 1923–24, Alcoa Steel Corporation built an aluminum plant on San Antonio Street west of downtown that became one of Alcoa’s main sources of supply for firearms production in Dallas County (now Dallas). By 1928 there were over 1,000 firearm factories operating statewide employing more than 25 million people across America; however much of this activity took place outside of Texas because it was considered too difficult or expensive to build firearms within state borders
