Seagoville, Texas is a small town located in the Hudspeth County seat of McAllen, Texas. The population was 8,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name "Seagoville" comes from Spanish meaning "Island of Seagulls." The town was founded in 1892 by brothers George and John Seagoville. They named it after their father, James Folsom Seagoville, who had come to Canada as a boy and then moved to Texas in 1869. In 1902, the brothers donated land for a school and chapel on what is now Main Street. The first building was completed in 1903 and served as the town's library until 1969 when it was replaced by the current building on East Broadway. The Seagovilles also established a cotton gin near present-day I-45 and FM 1960 in 1896. At that time there were only about 10 families living around Seagoville proper and most of their crops were grown over miles of open prairie or zoned areas set aside for agriculture because of heavy flooding during wet years. By 1909, however, they had built a two-story brick storehouse on West Main Street which became their home until 1949 when they sold it to Texaco for $3 million ($ as of 2009). Today Texaco still uses the property as an office complex known officially as "the oldSeagoville Warehouse." In 1924 John Folsom married Mabel Hildebrandt who bore him six children: four daughters (Nina, Betty Lou; Doris Mae; Cynthia)and two sons (John Jr., Kevin). After her death he married Edith Barton in 1937 but they divorced three years later because she could not live with him anymore without her sons accompanying her everywhere she went. After his mother's death he married Viola Margarita Martinez de la Vega whom he met while working at Gulf Refining Company where she worked as an intern during World War II She gave birth to his only son Eduardo Martinez de la Vega before dying from leukemia just prior to their marriage in 1951 . He then remarried Jeannine Whitechurch who bore him six children: five daughters (Jeannie; Kathy; Linda; Tammy); one son (Eddie) and one daughter (Diane). A sixth child was born following a surgical procedure but died shortly after birth due to complications from cerebral palsy caused by multiple birth defects..Mabel Hildebrandt's brother James Folsom Sr., originally from Nova Scotia helped build various structures within Seagoville including churches such as First Baptist Church which stands today on east Broadway between Elm and Magnolia Streets along with Holy Cross Catholic Church which stood west of Railroad tracks next door to Mrs Folsom's grocery store until demolished around 1975 During World War II many Americans left their homes behind both men & women took advantageof available transportation facilities headed south joining forces with Mexican government troops fighting against Axis forces along side other citizens throughout America Many American servicemen returned home post war & began farming operations within local communities forming farmer/soldiers organizations such as The Veterans Agricultural Workers Association Incorporated Today many businesses are situated within walking distance including several convenience stores chains like Exxon Mobil gasoline station chain KFC fast food restaurant large movie theater chains like AMC theaters suburban malls like Sam’s Club warehouse club Kroger grocery store gas stations hardware stores Bed Bath & Beyond Sears Home Store Macy’s department store
