It was founded in 1952 by two entrepreneurs, Harry Donaldson and Sidney Weiser. Today, The Optical Company contains more than 2,000 employees who sell a wide range of optics products including sunglasses, reading glasses, contact lenses and telescope accessories. The history of Seagoville dates back to 1881 when James Gorman opened a store on West Main Street. In 1932, The Optical Company merged with another company called American Optics which had been founded five years earlier by Arthur Cuthbert White and his brother-in-law Floyd Bickers. Together, these companies formed The American Optics Corporation which manufactured telescopes and other optical equipment. In 1954, American Optics changed its name to Seagoville Optical Industries Incorporated (SOI). SOI continues to operate as an independently registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation today. In 1951, Harry Donaldson and Sidney Weiser decided that they wanted to start their own business in Seagoville so they set up shop at 515 Waring Avenue. They started selling eyeglasses and other types of optical products from their storefront until they bought out American Optics in 1972. At that time SOI became one of the world's leading suppliers of eyeglasses and other optical gear for consumers around the globe. ian albrecht were some of SOI's earliest customers; he purchased several thousand pairs of corrective lenses from them between 1962-1964 during his tenure as President & CEO at AlliedSignal Corporation before becoming Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at The Optical Company in 1978 succeeding Harry Donelson Jr.. ian albrecht was succeeded as CEO by William Hickey after he took over from IAN Albrecht upon his retirement from AlliedSignal Corporation in 1984 then served as CEO until 1992 when he stepped down due to health problems related to rheumatoid arthritis

Seagoville was founded in 1857 by James Seagoville and his brother, John. The community was named for the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Spain from Africa. The seaport served as a commercial center for the area until the late 19th century. In 1916, Seagoville became part of Brownsville when that city was created from parts of Galveston and Houston.
