The Seagoville, Texas plant was founded in 1934 by John A. Ladd as the first production line for high capacity storage tanks and other water-related equipment. The company grew rapidly through the years, becoming one of the leading producers of high capacity storage tanks in the world. In 1982, Ladd merged with two other companies to form a new organization, American Tank & Storage Corporation (ATSC). ATSC continued to produce high capacity storage tanks and related products until 2000. During that time, the company produced more than 100 million gallons of water-related equipment per year. Today, American Tank & Storage Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of BAE Systems plc., one of the largest defense contractor firms in the world. BAE Systems owns a majority stake in American Tank & Storage Corporation and operates it as a subsidiary within its broader armor manufacturing business. The town of Seagoville, Texas was founded in 1836 by Captain James F. Austin and his men who were moving west to new land. The town quickly grew and became a Hudsons Bay Company post on the Rio Grande. In 1849, Seagoville was renamed for General Sam Houston after his victory at San Jacinto. After the war, many Texans moved to Seagoville because of its good soil, lack of disease, and easy access to water. The Post Office closed in 1893 and the town slowly declined until it was abandoned in 1951. Today, only a few buildings remain from prior times in this small town on the banks of the Brazos River. It is interesting to think about what life would have been like back whenSeagoville was founded. Would there be a grocery store? A bank? A library? These are questions that still retain their answer today even though they have been answered by history! It is also interesting to consider how things have changed since then- during the years that Seagoville was abandoned most of its infrastructure had either been destroyed or lost forever due to flooding or decay. However, thanks to donations from individuals and groups over time (most notably PreservationTexas), some restoration has taken place- including reopening of the Post Office in 1951 as part of a larger project which ended up salvaging many items from inside! Overall, it’s amazing that such an ancient community can still survive despite all these challenges- both past and present!
In 1836, the land that is now Seagoville was part of what is now Comal County. The area was first settled by Spaniards in the early 1800s and then by Americans in the 1830s. The town of Seagoville began to form in the 1840s, when a post office was established there. In 1850, a school was built in the town and later became an academy. In 1870, a Methodist church was also built in Seagoville and remained in use until it burned down in 1938. In 1907, a railroad line was constructed through Seagoville and it soon became an important commercial center for the area. By 1920, however, Seagoville had declined as a commercial center due to its difficult access to transportation and its lack of amenities. During World War II,Seagoville served as one of several Japanese concentration camps located within Comal County.
