Seagoville is a small town located in Hockley County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Seagoville is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Seagoville were Indians who lived near the present day village of Crosby. In 1827, Captain John Sellers and his men discovered oil properties on a bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and named the land "Seagoville". The first well was drilled in 1829 by Orson Welles and other investors under contract from New Orleans. In 1886, General Edward Smedley purchased 640 acres (246 hectares) northwest of Seagoville for $5,000 cash from Nicholas Biddle. He developed it into what is now Loop 3 Rancho Seco State Park. The park included a picnic ground known as "Biddle's", which still stands today at the corner of US Highway 183 and FM 620 in Seagoville. After World War II, many veterans returned to this area after being discharged from military service or returning home during that war period. They began to build homes and businesses around Loop 3 Rancho Seco State Park; this later led to an increase in population because so many people wanted to live near military installations scattered throughout Hockley County when they started coming back home during that time period. In 1957, local citizens approved annexation by Austin of adjacent Round Rock with only one vote against it; this made Seagoville part of Austin proper rather than just Hockley County as had been planned before annexation occurred. At that time there were about 10 families living in Seagovilles main street which runs east-west along US Highway 183 between Waco Road (then FM 620) and Loop 303 Road (now IH 35W). By 1980 there were over 100 families living here including most everyone working within walking distance either directly or indirectly related to their jobs as farmers/ ranch hands/road builders/whatever else kept them busy during those years outside school days or playing at nearby parks like Barton Springs Pool or Eastman Pond while their children grew up inside learning more about our great American experiment called democracy!
