At that time, handguns were not common in America and most citizens had only spears or knives as weapons. The handgun ban lasted for thirty-six years before it was finally repealed in 1934. In that year, Americans started to become more familiar with firearms and began to demand gun safety measures. In 1907-08, Mrs. Mary Jane Stafford donated over 1 million dollars for construction of the Highland Avenue Bridge across Red River County; this bridge connected downtown Dallas with rural areas east of Dallas includingSeagateville., which at that time consisted of just a few homes and an employee training mill situated on FM 587 north of Interstate Highway 30A.. In 1916-17 when Southwestern Railroad constructed its line throughSeagateville., Mr. SeagleVilles new primary industry became shipping cotton directly from acreage south of Dallas to Houston shipyards along IH 35W.. Over time production shifted more towards livestock feedlot operations as well as other crops such as cornmeal for local consumption or export.. By 1970 about 60%ofSEAGOVILLE'S POPULATION RESIDED IN DOWNTOWN SEAGOVILLE,, DOWN FROM ABOUT 70% IN THE EARLY 1900S WHEN THE AREA WAS FIRST SETTLED OUT
The first white settlers in Seagoville, Texas were James and Jennie White. The town was founded on May 10, 1856 by James White and his wife Jennie. It was named for the seagoing ship "Seahawks" which had sunk off the coast of Mexico City in 1845. The townsite originally consisted of just a few sod huts, but over time it grew into a small community with around 100 residents. The Whites started out farming land around the town, but soon realized that they needed to find something else to do with their limited resources. They decided to build a house and began selling goods from their store. In 1861, they opened a second store in nearby Palestine. By 1865, the Whites had built a large brick warehouse that served as both their home and business office. This building still stands today and is used as an event hall for local businesses.
