The town of Seagoville, Texas was founded in 1881 by John W. Seagoville and his wife, Martha Jane. The community grew quickly due to its location at the mouth of the Brazos River and its access to shipping lanes. Today, Seagoville is a small but thriving community with a population of about 1,200 residents. The town was originally named for the ship "Seagrave," which sailed from Liverpool, England in 1848 and arrived in Corpus Christi, Texas on July 6th. The Seagrave served as the flagship of Commodore James Fenton's United States Squadron during the Mexican-American War. After returning home, the ship stopped at San Francisco before arriving in Galveston on October 11th. In 1851, Commodore Fenton ordered all U.S.-owned vessels to be renamed after heroes or slain patriots who had fought in the war such as Andrew Johnson and General Stephen Austin. The USS "Seagrave" was among those vessels that received her new name John W. Seagoville purchased land near what is now Seagoville in 1881 and started construction on a cotton gin and distillery called "The Works." The distillery became one of America's most successful businesses and helped contribute to the growth of Seagoville over time. In 1915, The Works merged with Sam Rayburn Tobacco Company to form United States Tobacco Company (USTC). At USTC, John W.'s son-in-law George Prentice led a team that developed cigarette manufacturing into an international industry under Prentice's leadership In 1954, United States Tobacco Company merged with British American Tobacco plc., creating Imperial Brands plc., which remains one of America's largest tobacco companies today Today, many people identify themselves as being from either Seagoville or nearby Tyler . Seagoville is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas, about 25 miles southwest of Dallas. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census and has since grown to 3,000 residents. It is part of the Grapevine-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 by James Payson and his family as a retirement community for nearby generals and admirals during World War II. The name "Seagoville" comes from an old Spanish place name meaning "Island in the Gulf," which is why it was chosen for its location on an island in the Trinity River. The first post office opened in 1893, and Seagoville grew into a small town with just over 100 residents by 1910. By then, it had developed a notable industrial base including two cotton mills (the present day White Sands Mills and Empire Cotton Mill), a sawmill, three farms (three were used as churches), a hotel/motel, two stores, and two schools. In 1925, Seagoville annexed neighboring Dunphy Township; this annexation led to increased growth due to trade between Seagoville andDunphy Township for goods such as lumber and soybeans. In 1951, Seagoville incorporated as a city under the new City Beautiful Act; this act allowed cities to grow rapidly but required them to maintain certain standards such as having police departments that were equal numbers of officers per thousand citizens or more than one fire department per 1,000 inhabitants." In 1970–71 when Fort Worth annexed much of Grapevine-Fort Worth Area Council County government - making it formally part of Fort Worth - portions ofSeagoville also became part of Fort Worth's jurisdiction including parts of Dunphy Township which sat within Grapevine's limits until 1954 when they were annexed into Fort Worth proper." After years of growth that exceeded expectations - especially given its large volume of commercial development - by 2000 Seagoville's population had reached 4,,000 people living primarily in its downtown area where there are five plazas: Plaza de la Constitución (named after Mexico’s Constitution); Plaza de los Deportes; Plaza de la Libertad; plaza aledaña al edificio histórico y cultural del Banco Federal Mexicano ( named after José Antonio Meza y Ugarte ); Plaza San Jacinto del Rio Grande ( named after Saint John's Cross Episcopal Church which had been destroyed by A&M students during WWII ); and Plazas Mayor Ortiz & Tiburcio & Cisneros & Peña Nieto near Starbuck’s Coffee Shop." The increase in population has led to increasing density within the city boundaries as well as problems with safety issues such as traffic congestion caused by high levels of pedestrian traffic on major streets adjacent to downtown areas." Currently plans are underway to demolish some traditional buildings along with several restaurants – among them Starbuck’s Coffee Shop – while construction begins on what will become an all-new downtown district complete with new skyscrapers overlooking the riverfront park that will house businesses localand international alike."
The area now known as Seagoville was first settled by Anglo-American settlers in the 1850s. The town was originally named for Captain James Seagrave, a naval officer who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as postmaster in Galveston. In 1868, the town was renamed for General John S. Grant, a general during the American Civil War and later president of the United States. The town officially became a city in 1914.
