The town of Seagoville, Texas was founded in 1879 by David Seagoville and his family. The Seagoville post office was established in 1881, and the first store in the town opened its doors on October 17,1881. By 1900, the population of Seagoville had grown to over 100 residents. The town became a local agricultural center during the early years of this century, with small businesses selling goods such as groceries, feed, eggs and farm animals. However, it was during World War I that Seagoville truly began to emerge as a major cultural and industrial center. As American servicemen returned from WWI with new supplies and technologies, they brought these innovations back toSeagoville and even helped start a few small companies. These technological innovations soon changed the fabric ofSeagoville’s economy- transforming it into one of America’s leading production centers for aircraft products. In addition to its economic contributions during World War I (and after), SeagOVille also played an important role in helping create Texas’s cowboy culture.. During the 1920s through 1930s, Seagoville continued to grow along with its industry but slowly lost its importance due to Interstate 10’s construction projects which took away much of their access to transportation services. However, after WWII when infrastructure improvement programs were started throughout America (including Interstate 20), Seagoviele regained some of its former prominence as an important regional center for technology development within Texas.. Today, there are approximately 350 residents living inSeAGOVILLE while another 150 employees call the community home. The Town has successfully nurtured both its commercial and cultural values which have continue unchanged since it was founded more than 100 years ago- emphasizing hard work & neighborhood involvement over flashy shows or glossier lifestyles; closely followed by values like “give & take” – taking what someone gives you without expecting anything in return
On November 3, 1835, Seagoville was named in honor of General George B. Seagoville, who had served in the Mexican-American War and had been a Major General in the Union army. The town was platted by John M. Maynard and James S. Webb on land that had been donated by Robert Sinton. The first post office was established in 1837, and the townsite became a county seat on December 12, 1840. The Texas Railroad reached Seagoville on July 1, 1866. On February 17, 1870, Seagoville voters approved an act to incorporate as a city. Mayor Clements formed a city government with five City Council members and twenty-five policemen to handle day-to-day operations of the city limits while the mayor directed all expenditures within city limits. On October 6, 1870, Mayor Clements resigned to take advantage of an offer from President Ulysses S. Grant for voluntary service in the United States military during the American Civil War (1861–1865). In 1906 Seagoville erected its first high school building which still stands today at 226 Neches Ave., just east of downtown Seagovilles main commercial district
