In 1892, one of Seabrook's most famous residents, Arthur Ashe, purchased a 2-meter telescope from the Berlin Observatory. In 1926, he donated it to the University of Texas at Austin and used it to teach undergraduate astronomy students. In 1978, the university sold the telescope to funds for research in astrophysics and space exploration. The current owner is the Southwest Research Institute (SWRI). The first scopes in Seabrook were designed for observing stars near Earth. A few years after Ashe's donation of his 2-meter telescope, a 1.5-meter telescope was erected on Pig Island in 1896 by Dr. Gifford Sibley*. In 1907, Seabrook incorporated as a Town under Chapter 7 of the Texas State Constitution. At that time it had a population of just over 100 people living on 3 square miles (10 km2). Over time however, Seabroook's population grew rapidly due to its location close to Amarillo and neighbouring towns and cities as well as easy access to highway travel
