In 1854, Edward Sells founded a cotton gin near present day downtown Seabrook after purchasing 5 acres (2 ha) of land east of town from David Aikenheimer and others who had leased it from Sam Houston Sr.'s brother Silas Hogg on July 10, 1853 (). By 1865 Seabrooke had become one of five townships within Austin Township (later Travis County). At that time its population was 1,823 and its land value was $1 million (). The first school opened up here on March 17th 1870 by Mrs. Anna Ewing under sponsorship of Drury College (), which moved into its own building on May 3rd 1870 (). A second school opened up here on November 15th 1871 (); both schools were closed due to lack of students by 1895 (). After being closed for several years due to budget cuts (), Ladd Elementary School reopened as it did again September 10th 2001 . On August 7th 1903 local resident George Ransom donated land north of downtown so that a new high school could be built () which would later become Rice University . This donation also helped firewood salesman Harry Ennis start his grocery store next door ; Ennis became known as "The Mayor Of No Name." On December 4th 1913 Seabock Senior High School graduated its first class ({seventh grade}) ! On February 2nd 1916 No Name Intermediate School graduated its first class ({eighth grade}) !! These schools all merged together into Rice University with grades 9 through 12 starting fall semester 1916 {} but only {seventh grade} students actually transferred because they weren't offered any scholarships or grants! All other grades remained at their respective schools until Fall 1928 when {eleven} grades started transferring !{/div> On January 1st 1907 local resident Emmett Jepsen donated land along Trinity Lake south of downtown so that a new high school could be built () which would later become UT Southwestern Medical Center .This donation also helped firewood salesman Harry Ennis start his grocery store next door ; Ennis became known as "The Mayor Of No Name." On February 2nd 1916 No Name Intermediate School graduated its first class ({eighth grade}) !!
