Seabrook is a small town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–New Braunfels–Rickrefe Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name Seabrook may come from Spanish and means "shore" or "reef". The first settlers in what is now Seabrook were Mexican nationals who arrived in 1848. A post office was established in 1851, and a store was built in 1860. The first settler to homestead in what is now Seabrook was John Witty. He purchased land east of the railroad tracks on which he built his home and farm. Witty's children took over the farm when he died in 1865. In 1892, two men named Gorman and Killebrew bought 160 acres (61ha) of land east of the railway line from Witty's heirs for $4 per acre ($10 per km²). They set about developing it into a farming community known as Gorman Prairie. In 1905, they donated land to the Methodist Church to create its own parish center; this became known as Seabrooke Chapel (later First UnitarianUniversalist Church). In 1916, J.B. Ladd founded an oil well at Pecos Wells eighteen miles west of Gorman Prairie; this became one of Texas' leading production wells until it closed down by 1978 due to environmental damage caused by drilling operations around that time! In 1951, school District No. 1 opened up along with Seabrooke Academy which would grow into one of Texas’ leading high schools today!
