Schertz, Texas is a small town located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census and 8,711 as of 2016. Schertz is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1885 by John Schertz and his wife Martha Schertz as a farmstead on a parcel of land that now includes much of downtown Schertz and parts of South Side neighborhoods such as Mayfair and Radnor. In early years, Schertz was an agricultural center; but due to its location on the Chisholm Trail (the only one in Texas), trade with other states increased its importance as a commercial center for cotton, cattle, grains, lumber, oil wells and other businesses. In 1886 the first post office opened in Schertz; it closed in 1918 when mail service from Austin was expanded to include southern Travis County. In 1925 the name changed to Austin when City Hall was built thereon; it continued to be called Austin until 1959 when it became Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area's third largest city after Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston/ Galveston metropolitan areas had become fully co-extensive with each other through annexation of smaller towns within their respective counties. The city annexations were: North Park (1927), University Heights (1929), Midway (1931), White Settlement (1935), Highland Park (1937) and East Side Triangle (1945). Downtown Schertz experienced significant growth following annexation including new housing developments such as The Summit Mall complex which spanned Elm Street from Main Street southward across I-10 just east of downtown before terminating at Loop 610 northward near Interstate 35W; then followed another wave of development along Broadway between I-10 eastbound adjacent to Loop 610A northwestward into what is now River Oaks neighborhood west thereof - this included major redevelopment including The Sheraton Hotel which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1907 - before concluding with the completion in 1965 ofriver Oaks Drive - today's business district boundaries began almost immediately thereafter with some remaining annexed peripheral neighborhoods such as Garden Oaks farther east still serving primarily institutional users while more residential areas closer downtown became increasingly popular for family living or professional use being developed for example by architect Bruce Fuller under license from noted developer Harry Massenburg - original plans called for most conversions occurring along Elm Streets between Main Street southwestward towards Interstate 10 where arterial designation would have ended but instead streets running parallel thereto were rerouted dead end fashion becoming largely residential Avenues rather than main thoroughfares throughout most portions thereof resulting in overall streetscape appearance quite different from that originally envisioned making much contemporary architecture difficult or impossible without extensive restoration work even beyond recent examples

Schertz, Texas is a town in Hood County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hood County. Schertz was founded in 1881 by John Schertz and First Baptist Church pastor James Hirsch. In 1925, Schertz became an independent municipality with its own government and school district. Schertz was named for German physicist Friedrich Wilhelm Scheerz (1762-1837). Scheerz moved to America in 1793 and settled near present-day Schertz in what is now Hood County. He operated a sawmill and gristmill here until his death in 1837. His son Adolf founded the first post office here in 1881. In 1925, Schertz became an independent municipality with its own government and school district under the name of "Scheritz". The new municipality had no landowning families but drew its support from general commercial interests surrounding it including lumber companies, railways, agriculturalists, brewers and other retailers. A year later, it annexed the adjoining unincorporated community of Newtonville which had been formed as a result of a land sale between two farmers from nearby Valley Springs Settlement east of present-day New Braunfels. The annexation created an agricultural center located on high ground near Newtonville that continues to be important today as a place where crops are grown such as corn, soybeans and beans; cattle; dairy products; roses; fruit trees; vegetables; honeycombs; hatchetsmiths' tools/stone tools; saddles/horses) among others products used world wide for various purposes including automobiles manufacturing plants etc... The townsite site where Schertz now stands was surveyed by JB Wright & Son on October 11th 1870 while they were surveying parts of present day Hood County during the early days of railroad development within this area A post office called "Newtonville" was established at this location on April 12th 1870 by Wm Crain & Brothers who also served as local merchants. On May 8th 1870 Dnelson Bros received lands adjacent to modern day Scheetz northeast corner high water mark just north of current US Highway 183 about three miles west of present day Scheetz . The original lots were sixty nine square feet including one lot measuring one hundred forty five feet long x thirty six feet wide with depth fifteen feet . This property would eventually house four churches – First Baptist Church (later known as Christ Episcopal), Second Baptist Church (later known as First Presbyterian), Methodist Episcopal Zion Missionary Chapel (later known as Evangelical Lutheran) - all built between 1871-1875 This initial purchase included about three quarters acres bordering onpresent day Schroeder Road which still houses part or all OF THE FIRST BUILDING ON SCHERZTOWN SITE: A FEW DOORSTEP VICTORIAN TREE SURVEYED BY ROBERT LEE ZEITLIN IN 1907 AS PART OF HIS PROJECT TO IDENTIFY AND RECORD GERMAN AMERICAN PLANTATIONS BETWEEN 1880 AND 1907
