The Schertz brothers started a small grocery store in the town and soon realized they needed to find ways to keep up with the growth of the community. In 1886, they opened a branch office of the First National Bank in Schertz. The bank helped support the growth of Schertz and its businesses until it merged into Wells Fargo in 1907. In 1922, Fritz Schertz died at age ninety-six and his wife continued running the business until her death in 1943. Emma Schertz passed away in 1951, leaving behind an extensive property portfolio that includes much of what is now downtown Schertz.
