Schertz, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Schertz is located on U.S. Route 90 south of Round Rock and north of Lubbock. The name "Schertz" comes from German settlers who named it Kesselstadt after their home village in Hesse-Nuremberg, Germany. The first post office in Schertz was established on December 25, 1879, and lasted until it was discontinued on March 14, 1902. The present day Schertz was founded by John Pritchard and his family in 1887 as a small ranching community about southeast of Lubbock on the Brazos River floodplain near what is now Interstate 10 east of Round Rock (the original parish). A railroad station was built thereon and the community prospered as a farming center with cattle drives to market throughout central Texas for many years; however, by 1945 Schertz had shrunk to its current size due to rustling by outlaws operating along I-10 during that era. In 1951 an oil well was drilled in what would become downtown Schertz through thick oak trees which bordered fields used for corn production adjoining the river; however this discovery led to little development until more recent times when retail stores began opening up within walking distance of the old schoolhouse where services were provided such as grocery shopping and banking services before those institutions closed down around 2000 or so when e-commerce became prevalent across much of rural America etc.; then again Downtown Schertz slowly grew back into its former prominence as various businesses opened up all around town providing vitality once again to this otherwise sleepycommunity just outside Austin proper!
