Schertz is a small city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1876 by German immigrants. The population of Schertz peaked at over 100,000 in the early 21st century, but has since decreased to about 50,000. In 2009, Schertz became the first city in Texas to pass a resolution recognizing gun safety as an important public health issue. The town of Schertz was founded on November 6th 1876 by Germans who had come to the area from Germany and Austria. At that time there were no towns or villages in Hidalgo County and only a scattering of ranchos and outposts scattered around the landscape. After several years of growth and development within the new community, Sketchzville--later known as Schertz--was platted on September 30th 1880 under contract by Mayor Garrett & Mrs Parks with JH Pryor as Surveyor General for this new territory which now included present day Hidalgo County and parts of Webb County. The original plat included land for three churches: St John’s Lutheran Church (founded 1882), First Baptist Church (founded 1886) and Christophers Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church (founded 1889). In 1889 Schertz annexed part of Webb County including what is today Spring Branch which made it one of the most populous cities in Texas at that time with over 100 000 people living within its boundaries. With so many people living near each other it was necessary for businesses and citizens to establish common areas such as streetscapes and parks where they could convene to chat or play games after work or during lunchtime or evening hours. Today much remains unchanged from those days including aspects like sidewalks being wide enough for two cars side-by-side rather than just one; late 1800s architecture still prevalent throughout town with beautiful homes sitting atop large yards complete with flower gardens; trees growing along both sides of roadways instead of just one side; businesses starting up shortly after incorporation such as jonkers hardware store which opened in 1895 followed quickly by numerous others until around 1930 when all but one closed due to economics; strict gun laws at that time prohibiting any type handguns not having a serial number registered with county government ensuring handgun ownership remained tightly controlled
