On January 1, 1959, it adopted its current name of Schertz after Gussie Schieffer, who had donated land for the development and named it in her honor. The city of Arlington (northwest of Schertz) annexed parts of Starr County in 1966; this made both Arlington and Schertz residents within Arlington's borders although they continue to use separate names for their respective municipalities. In 2001, the City Council voted to change its name to Arlington Heights since most residents there prefer that appellation over "Starr County". It was named for General David G. Schertz who fought in the Mexican–American War. The first post office in Schertz opened on November 15, 1871. The village of Schertz consolidated with other villages within Brownsville on January 1, 1907 and became the Municipality of Brownsville which incorporated as a city on February 17, 1914. On July 10, 1933, the Municipal Mayoralty was abolished and replaced by a City Council form of government with Mayor-Council members being elected by popular vote only instead of from individual homes like previous councils had been. On December 5th of that year it was announced that Schertz would be joining the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area as part of the Great Southwest Airlines merger effective January 1st following its purchase by Dallas-Fort Worth Airways Corporation (DFA). The decision to merge gave DFA almost 40% control over all flights serving Dallas-Fort Worth area airports including those operated by TXA (now American Airlines) and IAH (now Delta Air Lines). This move left Schertz without any commercial air service but with plans to establish a small airport just north of town providing connections to DFW Airport using private planes or buses shuttleming residents between their homes and downtownDallas/DFW Airport while also offering day trips to various parts of Dallas/Fort Worth area including Dealey Plaza and Arlington Cemetery
