Schertz, Texas is a small town located in Hidalgo County, Texas. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Schertz is the county seat of Hidalgo County. The first settler in Schertz was Isaac Schertz who arrived in 1836. In 1837, John and Sarah Schertz also settled in Schertz. In 1841, George Wertheimer came to Schertz from Illinois and founded the Wertheimer grocery store. One hundred years later, on July 12th, 2011, the last grocery store in Schertz closed its doors after more than 60 years of operation. Today there are a few remaining businesses that provide services to the local community including an pool hall which has been open since 1955; a post office; an old-fashioned movie theater; and a library which opened its doors in 1984. Hidalgo County courthouse is located just outside of town on US Highway 281 and it played host to many county meetings over the years before closing down for renovations late last year. A new courthouse will be built next door but until it’s finished construction will take place at the old courthouse site where court hearings are currently taking place under tight security conditions due to concerns about vandalism/damage done to adjacent property during recent years by vandals looking for scrap metal or other potential materials to create souvenirs from courthouse renovation projects!

It lies on the banks of Buffalo Bayou and has a small shopping district along Buffalo Street which includes several smaller stores and two banks.
